Modernikon
curated by Francesco Bonami
September 23
On September 23, the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin opened Modernikon, an exhibition of works by contemporary Russian artists. Over the course of three years, curator Francesco Bonami selected twenty artists of various generations from a total of eighty portfolios. This is the first exhibition in the upcoming Year of Italy in Russia/Russia in Italy (2011).
The foundation has organized its exhibition space in such a way that practically each of the artists has their own small room or cubbyhole. GMG Gallery artist Alina Gutkina has even been given three such rooms. In the video works on display at the show, Gutkina investigates the problem of invididual subcultural identity. Alina shot three short films about teenage boys: each of the videos presents a day in their lives.
The other GMG Gallery artist selected by Bonami for the show is Yakov Kazhdan. His piece Ordinary Grand Stil critically examines the possibilities for the existence of the documentary image, which is not authentic, but alters according to the needs of the author’s narrative. Addressing the notion of the “grand style” (the work’s title contains a play on words that alludes to Mikhail Romm’s famous documentary film Ordinary Fascism (1965)), Kazhdan questions the “aesthetic of classic documentary cinema, which turns out to be a find for ideology, in which the human aspect becomes a cliché.”

Both events attracted great interest among wide sections of the public and were widely covered in the professional press.
